The Story of the Medjool
In ancient times, the Medjool date was considered the ultimate delicacy. Unrivaled in taste, the Medjool became a prized possession of Moroccan royalty. The unique taste of the Medjool so captivated royalty that they hoarded the fruit and only they and their families knew of its delicate, but satisfying taste. At the turn of the century, a rare disease killed the beautiful palms of Morocco and only one Medjool producing oasis survived the attack.
Thanks to a man named Carrifi, who defied his countrymen by relocating eleven healthy palms, the Medjool escaped total extinction. Eventually the Medjool, characterized by its high sugar content and meaty plumpness, thrived once again. And gradually new areas were found that could produce this most delicate of fruits.
One such area is Southern California where the majestic medjool producing palms sprinkle the banks of the Colorado River. The fruit which was once reserved for royalty has become the most widely chosen date in the world. The time and care required to ensure the uniqueness of the Medjool remains amazingly similar to that displayed in ancient Morocco.
Medjool growers, to ensure huge, plump dates, thin out about 80% of the dates on each bloom to allow the remaining 20% to reach their maximum size. It takes one man all day to thin four trees. When it's time to harvest, experienced men ascend the forty foot palms and carefully pick the Medjools by hand. Machines are also forbidden in the packaging of Medjools for fear of damaging this precious fruit.
The Medjool Date, once a delicacy know only to royalty, is now the most popular date in the world. Enjoy!
